Buying antiques is an intimidating step which is made all the more complicated by the fact that many antique buyers do not understand the exact process through which antiques are purchased. Many collectors and dealers waste valuable time searching in places where they believe that these items are in great abundance. The process through which an antique develops seems to bypass the comprehension of many antique dealers and collectors.
It does not take a lot of forethought to realize that the very best place to look for new antiques or collectibles is to simply go to the place where they originate from. They do not start at auctions, or at flea markets, or at antique shows - antiques originate in people’s homes. This easy to remember, fundamental concept explains the origins of at least ninety-nine percent of the antiques you see.
The other simple fact is that most antiques that you are most likely to get a great deal on reside in the homes of people who are older. You will, more or less, find less of an abundance of the items in a young person’s home than in an older one’s home. Throughout history, the older generation had to make do by saving everything in abundance, and many didn’t throw anything away they thought might be of some value. From the 1950’s toys in the closet to the old toaster that was just too good to throw away, older folks still have most of everything they ever owned and this is where antiques originate.
That brings up another question, since you now know where and how antiques originate. That question being: knowing that antiques form in people’s homes - especially older people’s homes - where are you gong to spend your prime time? The principles that follow took me years to understand.
1. In order to buy new antiques, you have to be in a position to see more of them. 2. In order to see more of them, you have to look at more household accumulations. 3. To accomplish this, you simply must get into more people’s homes where the antiques originate.
These aren’t hard principles to understand, but putting them to use will give you lots of advantages over the competition. It is likely that your fellow dealers or collectors will use one of five methods in finding their antiques. You’ll likely see your competition looking through their local estate or garage sales, auctions, “pickers”, flea markets, and stores such as Goodwill.
The principles put forth in this article should have made you aware of the fact that you will actually find much more antiques in people’s homes. Familiarizing yourself with the places that antiques originate, and searching there, will make your search much more successful. You may just find yourself going very far indeed if you focus on the tips offered in this article!
